Classic vs Living
Pre-generated, or Classic, games, are modules that are written with characters provided. The author of the module creates and includes the six characters in the module, and these are distributed at the start of the slot. Players have roughly ten to fifteen minutes to familiarize themselves with their characters before the game begins. Classics generally require less rules knowledge in the system, and the games focus more heavily on roleplaying and character interaction.
Living games offer a similar feel to a home campaign. Modules are written for a campaign, but not for a specific set of characters. Players create, according to certain rulesets (see below for links), characters, which they can then bring to any module at any convention in that living campign. Their character can then advance, gaining treasure, experience and skill.
